Job Description

Job Purpose

To provide compassionate, patient-centered palliative care by managing symptoms, offering emotional and psychosocial support, and ensuring dignity and comfort throughout the care continuum in collaboration with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.

Duties and responsibilities

Reporting to the Nurse In-Charge in the area of deployment, the position holder will be responsible for the following:

  1. Delivering palliative care services that are tailored to each patient.

  2. Promoting and supporting patient and family autonomy in decisions affecting symptom control and quality of life.

  3. Responding to symptom control issues promptly, evaluating interventions with fellow nurse and multidisciplinary team members as appropriate, and adjust as required.

  4. Evaluating care outcomes and documenting as required.

  5. Completing a holistic assessment of needs in collaboration with the patient.

  6. Developing and implementing a tailored, appropriate care plan in consultation with the patient and family e.g., discharge planning, expected outcomes.

  7. Creating an environment where the patient and their family are actively supported and empowered to participate in their care.

  8. Facilitating the provision of psychological and spiritual care.

  9. Facilitating provision of counselling services on end-stage disease process and educating patients and families on the next steps

  10. Any other duties as may be assigned.

Job Specification

Key Qualifications and Experience Requirements

  1. Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN)/Kenya Registered Nursing (KRN) from a recognized institution.

  2. Higher Diploma in Palliative Nursing, or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.

  3. Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) will be an added advantage.

  4. Registration by the Nursing Council of Kenya.

  5. Valid practicing license as a Palliative Nurse from the Nursing Council of Kenya.

  6. Proficiency in computer applications.

  7. Compliance with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution.
